How to create spooky glowing Halloween characters

Posted by Jo Jeffery on

Unleash your child’s imagination this Halloween with this fun craft activity. Turn unused paper cups into spooky characters with glowing noses.

This craft is a hands-on craft activity perfect for little hands and offers plenty of fun for the whole family. As well as being a good way to reuse ordinary paper cups, this is a perfect way to engage your child with a fun activity. These glowing creations are sure to bring a smile and a bit of spooky charm to your festivities!

Do not forget there is a long list of characters you can create and once you have a few you can also turn them into an engaging game of skittles.

Supplies needed:

- Paper cups + extra for cleaning brushes
- Paints

- No flame tea light candles
- Pencil and pens
- Paint brushes
- Scissors
- Glue and double-sided foam pads
- Plates
- Napkins (optional for cleaning brushes)

Duration:

Approximately 20 minutes plus drying time

Skill Level:

Medium

Instructions:

Step 1: Preparing your painting area and gathering your materials

Prepare your area by laying down a table cover as you will be getting a little painty so you don’t things to get too messy. Then find all the materials you will need.

Step 2: Creating your glowing nose

Poke a hole in the middle of your cup using the end of your paint brush or pencil. But don’t put the tea light in just yet.

Step 3: Painting your cup

Now here is the fun part, getting the paints out. It is time to paint your cup a solid colour which depends on the spooky character you’re making. Here we will make a spooky Frankenstein, so we are going to need green paint. However, the steps are the same for any character you want to make.

You might also want to add any missing elements such as spikes for the hair and some additional spots or stitches for added character.

Don’t forget to give the cup enough time to dry.

Step 4: Preparing your face

But don’t worry, while your cups are drying you can get started on the face. Start by drawing all the elements you will need. For Frankie we will need two bolts each in the shape of a T, two circles for the eyes, one long strip for the mouth and four smaller strips for the stitches.

Step 5: Painting your face

So now you will need to paint your face elements. For Frankie you just need to paint the bolts black on both sides and add two dots on the eyes. There’s no need to be very neat as you will be cutting them out.

And don’t forget it will need to dry.

Step 6: Cutting and gluing – please ask your parent or guardian for help here as scissors can be sharp

Cut out all your pieces and, using your glue, stick the pieces to your cup. The eyes go slightly above the nose and the mouth slightly below.

And don’t forget glue needs time to dry.

Step 7: Add your glow

You’re nearly done now, just the last piece to make your character really glow. Push your tea light through the hole you made in step two and secure with your foam pads.

Additional characters | Tips for Success

Don’t forget there are many characters you can make. Here are some and the elements you will need to create them.

Bat: black cup and two wings, mouth and two eyes

Witch Hat: green cup and two eyes, and strips for hair

Pumpkin: orange cup and two eyes and mouth

Cat: black cup and two ears, two eyes, four whiskers and mouth

Spider: orange cup and two eyes and eight legs

Stackable Cup-tastrophe Game:

Cup-tastrophe is where you use your characters to build a tower. Sounds easy right. But you see the taller your tower the wobblier it gets. The person that knocks it down has to say boo and is no longer in play.

You each have a cup and you must go in a circle and carefully stack you character on top of the one put down before.

If you put your cup down and it balances, you pass on to the next person. However, if you knock the tower down you have to say ohh boo. Then everyone but you will start again.

If you manage to build your tower and have no characters left, you then will have to unbuild your tower without knocking your cups down.

You will do this until you have a single person left, they will be the winner.

Skittles Game:

Stack each of your characters on top of each other in a pyramid, how big your pyramid depends on how many characters you have. Then you take turns to throw a ball. Each line in the pyramid has a score and you need to knock down as many as you can to get the most points. The person with the most points wins
