How To Lay a Cakestand

Posted by Beth Pickard on

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” - Henry James

Did you know that the concept of tea parties and afternoon tea only came about in the early 1940’s? Introduced in England by the seventh Duchess of Bedford after she would become hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. She asked that tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her at this time each day. This became a habit and she then began to invite her friends to join. This then became a fashionable activity and the upper classes would enjoy afternoon tea in the drawing, dressed up in their gowns and gloves. Today there is a huge array of venues offering afternoon tea, from the glamorous Ritz and Fortnum and Mason, to your local eateries.

Partnering with The National Garden Scheme for their Great British Garden Party campaign has made our love for tea parties increase ever more! We have become so adept at creating our tea party tablescapes with our Truly Scrumptious ranges we could do it with our eyes closed! We wanted to provide some tips and tricks for setting up your own tea party, especially when it comes to the table centrepiece – the cakestand. Here is your step by step guide using our Truly Scrumptious Cakestand:

Once you’ve easily put together the cake stand from the instructions provided (don’t forget it’s reversible for a different design!)

Step 1. Savoury sandwiches go at the bottom -The stand gets sweeter as you go up! We enjoy traditional selections such as salmon sandwiches or cucumber. Quintessentially British!

Step 2. The next level up is for scones. Now we know this can be a controversial question… cream or jam first? The Talking Tables team is divided on which way to layer but either way this is a delicious necessity.

Step 3. Sweet treats at the top! We all have our top picks of cakes and pastries so mix them up and pick a few to sit at the top of the stand. We like to add our Truly Scrumptious Food Flags to these top treats, really completing the regal look!

Once the rest of your tea party is set (head over to our Inspiration page for some inspo!) you're ready to enjoy. Don't forget you can get our array of tea party bundles here, and for each sale we shall be donating to the National Garden Scheme's fund for nursing charities.
